Boys to Men

Hi friends. I have two fun projects to show you and today it's all about the fellas. If you're like me, you always get a creative block when it comes to making masculine cards. For me, I think two things hold me back. One is that I don't have a big stash of masculine themed stamps and products for boys and men. Secondly, I always think that guy cards have to be overly manly-man looking.

Well, this month Papertrey's release is all about the fellas. You'll now have a huge selection of stamps and accessories that you can add to your stash. Problem #1 solved. Now for that second part. Here's my little tip for you: Don't think that boy/guy cards have to be overly masculine looking. You don't have to add hardware and a toolbox stamp to a guy card to make it look masculine. You can use ribbon and buttons on a guy card. Guy cards can be whimsical.
Guy cards can have fun colors. It's all good. And I'll bet you that no fella is ever going to turn down a handmade card from you. So let go of the worries and just create!!

On to my projects. My first card was created with a little boy's birthday in mind. I used Becky's new Fly Away stamp set to create an airplane scene with a bun birthday banner flying by. The *hip hip hooray* is from Heather's new Fillable Frames #3 set being released this month. The whimsical color scheme was created by using ribbon and cardstock in New Leaf and patterned papers from the Green Boutique collection. I used Rustic Cream Twine to create a loopy effect between the buttons...kinda like jumping from one cloud to the next. A perfect card for a little boy's birthday.
Here are the Copic Sketch colors I used to color the airplane images.
This next birthday card is perhaps for an older fella in your life. First off, you might notice the wood grain effect on the car. Do you remember those old station wagons that had the faux wood grain panels on the side? I thought Dawn's new Background Basics: Woodgrain stamp would make a fun, vintage looking car.
My background papers are from Green Boutique and Turning a New Leaf. For my focal point of the car, I used Nichole's new Enjoy the Ride stamp set and the coordinating die. I love these coordinating dies. Remember...you die cut the car image first and then stamp the images afterwards. I stamped the wood grain pattern onto Kraft cardstock, then stamped the car image, then paper pieced it onto my Copic colored car image. Love!!
For the bottom of my card, I used Lisa's new A Little Argyle set to created a very muted background for my sentiments. The happy birthday sentiment is from Enjoy the Ride and the follow your dreams sentiment is from Heather's Fillable Frames #3 stamp set. Vintage Buttons are tied with Rustic Jute Twine. I also used the rick rack die to add a whimsical look to the card, a perfect substitution for ribbon.
I hope you are inspired to create something fun for the fellas now. Be sure to check out the rest of the Papertrey team creations:

Love the colours you chose for both of these - that woodgrain bug is so full of fun and absolutely wonderful! And the whirly string on the airplane card has such great visual movement!

What a great card with the car - they were called "woodies" back in the day. The Beach Boys even refer to it in one of their songs. Great use of the woodgrain stamp.

boo to the critics. Your blog is not only an AMAZING blog for artwork but for life details that always interest me. You can't make everybody happy all the time and has anyone heard the saying, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all! You are by far my favorite from the papertrey ink team and I stop by everyday. don't worry about the critics, especially when they have to hid their name.
