Advent Craft Project

Hi everyone, December will be here before we know it and I have a big list of to do items. Last year, the girls and I made an Advent countdown box and created the tags for it. This year, we're continuing the fun with Advent events each and every day. For the first day of the countdown, I thought it would be fun to get into the holiday spirit by having the girls create some artwork for the refrigerator. The idea is that Josey and Jordan will each get a box of the same supplies. Their challenge will be to create a piece of Christmas artwork that will be displayed all month. They will have one hour to work on their project. A piece of each of the supplies included has to be used on their project. They will able to use generic supplies from my stamp room if they want to.

To start off, I gathered up some supplies including patterned paper, solid cardstock, felt snowflakes, ribbon, jingle bells, buttons, etc. from my Holiday Inspiration Station. I then packed the supplies up in some Papertrey stamp boxes. I'm going GREEN by recycling and I know lots of you often wonder what to do with your PTI boxes. Use 'em up girls! I added a strip of patterned paper around the box to cover up adhesive that was left on the box when I removed the original PTI label. I tied on some green ribbon that the girls can re-use for their project too.
I then reached for my JustRite Stampers Christmas Ensemble Stamp Set and made a quick label for the art supply box. I stamped the combined image of the border sentiment and center image with Papertrey Ripe Avocado ink onto Papertrey Stamper's Select White Cardstock. I then cut out my image with a scallop Spellbinder's Die Template. I adhered the labels to the front of the boxes with pop dots. The girls will be able to re-use the tag on their projects too. I also included a candy cane for the girls to have while they're creating their projects. They'll have cocoa and listen to Christmas music as they create.

I also added in a personalized holiday greeting from the girls, using WorldWin's Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum. You can find it at The Paper Mill Store blog by clicking on the store link in the upper left hand corner. The ink dries really fast and prints a nice clean, crisp sentiment.
Do you do an Advent calendar countdown each year? What are you including for some of your days? I would love to have some new ideas this year.
Note: There's a sale going on at JustRite Stampers. Be sure to check out the Buy One, Get One FREE Special going on HERE. Sale is good until November 30th. There's also tons of ideas and inspiration in the gallery so if you have time, stop and take a peek.

Ooo, how fun! I'd love a kit like that myself, so I know the reds will enjoy it immensely. I wonder how sticky everything will get with that candy cane involved, though. Maybe they should stick it in their hot chocolate! :) One of our favorite Christmas traditions is to take the day off from school on the first day that it *really* snows. We listen to Christmas music, have hot chocolate and watch Christmas movies. We look forward to it every year. :)

What a fantastic idea!! Such a great idea for them to do together. My niece is 6 and loves crafts. I think I'm going to make her a little kit so she can make something. Thanks for such a wonderful idea. Look forward to seeing what the girls create. :)

What a great idea Mish! I'm so going to copy it! We have 2 grandsons living with us now, and I can't wait to do something like this. How about going shopping for a gift for someone in need?

Those kits are adorable. Way too much work for my 2 and 5 year old to appreciate but I'm filing this idea away for another year. Thanks!

we have advent boxes ...one for each day in various sizes. Each box contains a Bible verse for the family to read and usually there is candy or a small prize inside each box for each of my two kids. This year however, we are trying to fill each box with a note about someTHING we are going to do as a family..movie night, game night, zoo light safari, hear they symphony, etc.

love your ideas

Your girls are so lucky to have a funky cool mama like you. I would have LOVED that little goodie box when I was growing up!
I've got 3 boys (8, 10 and 12) but I'm thinkin' they might just enjoy this idea as well.

What a fun idea for the girls to do..I love the creativity.. Our Advent calendar is a quilt!! I saw one in New Zealand in 1997, and came home and made my own version: it is a tree "checkered" in red and green on a background of black with stars. I sewed one button on each square [25 in all]. The edge is done in red and green squares and I sewed buttons on them [25 in all]. I've been collecting mini ornaments for years, and they are hung around the edge. Each day one ornament is taken off the edge and placed on the tree. It took a long time to make [mostly the button sewing] but it is fun to bring out each year....Looking forward to seeing what the girls make each day.

When I was a child my mother & father had a board with a felt tree and then pockets to hold candy canes. The pockets were numbered and my siblings (3 of us) got to take out a candy cane every three days. Alot of memories thinking of this. Enjoy your project for this year. I say a post for a box shape of matchboxes that are numbered and you can fill each day with the item. You can find this on Bubbly Fun. Very cute. Another one on papercrafts by rach.
