Fan Mail

Edit: Look what we have here...Judy H. was kind enough to share a recipe! Thanks Judy!! When I get my mom's recipe, I'll do a comparison but this sounds good to me!

1 pkg. unsweetened kool-aid (the kind you have to add sugar to. We like lemonade cuz it gives the popsicles a nice tartness to them)

1 pkg. (3 oz.) any flavor jello (can be sugar free or full flavor)

1 c. sugar

2 c. boiling water

2 c. cold water

Place jello, kool-aid and sugar in pitcher. Boil water. Once boiling, add to pitcher and stir to dissolve. Then add cold. Pour in Tupperware popsicle molds and place in freezer. Once they start to set up, add popsicle sticks. I don't use the ones included with the molds; I use craft sticks that you can get at Michael's or WM for $2.99 for 1,000 - lasts me awhile! lol Enjoy! I hope this is what you're looking for. Judy H.

It's hotter than H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS here in Kansas!! Our nice cool front is GONE and the typical Kansas weather is back. Temps are supposed to be near 100 with a heat index near 110. That is HAWT, folks!! This morning it's so humid, there is a dense fog covering the ground. Needless to say, we'll be inside enjoying the AC or we'll be heading to Grandma's pool!!

So today I picked a project to show you that's all about the FAN! Karen Lockhart released this new fan stamp, available at Ellen's store, and it immediately reminded me of my childhood days. We lived in an old, big two story stucco house. We didn't have AC for the longest time and when we did get it, it was just a window unit that cooled a portion of the downstairs. All of the kids' bedrooms were upstairs so each of us had a big box fan in our window. It barely kept us cool though so we slept many a night on the living room floor downstairs. It was like a big slumber party!

We also had lots of fans running because my mom was always canning or cooking so the house was HOT! We had an aqua, metal fan just like the one in my card. It oscillated back and forth and I was always afraid someone would cut their toe off! We also stuck our faces up close to to the fans and repeated the vowels really slowly so that it would make funny sounds......AAAAA......EEEEEE........III.....OOO......UUUUU. Anybody else do that, or were we just bored farm kids trying to entertain ourselves??? LOL!

Okay, enough down memory lane, here's my card. I saw the sentiment *fan mail* somewhere and wanted to use it with Karen's cute stamp. So I got out some of my dollar alphabets and created my own little *fan mail* banner......and a *for you* circle tag to hang off the ribbon.

I used Spellbinder's square and scallop square dies to frame the image. I colored the image with Copic markers....the same color as I remember that old fan we had....and also airbrushed the square while my square Nestie die was still in place. Background paper is from October Afternoon and solid cardstock and ribbon is from Papertrey Ink. For the shiny fan blades, I used Ranger Glossy Accents. It dries to a perfect shine!
Okay everyone, stay COOL this weekend. I've got my mom on a mission to find this old Popsicle recipe she used to make. It was made with Jello and she froze it in these white Tupperware Popsicle molds. I'm hoping she finds the recipe so I can make slushes for the family this weekend. I think I'll go turn on my fan in the meantime! Have a great weekend!!

Oh I love this - take me waaayyy back!!! Oh my, did you grow up with me??! I remember those huge fans in the windows, they made so much noise I don't know how we slept! The popsicles were made with kool-aid and J-E-L-L-O powder. Yummo! Can you pretty please post the recipe if you find it?

The glossy accents on the fan blades totally make this card. I'd love to CASE this one but sadly, wouldn't know where to start. TFS.

I have family in Kansas....we ALWAYS visited in the summer!! I can imagine how hot it is! The card is super cute as always, I love the shiny blades! My mom made jello popsicles too! She used dixie cups that we could just peel off. Peach flavor was my fav!

Fantastic card Michelle! Love the glossed fan blades.

We used to do that with the fan too, often saying "Luke. I am your faaaaaaatherrrr." Darth Vader style. ;)

OK I remember those fans and we lived in the city. So it just wasn't a country thing and we did the vowel thing. Great trip down memory lane. Your card is just so adorable. I love that sentiment. Ooohhh those popsicles-they were such a treat. Thanks for sharing! :)

My mouth dropped as you were sharing your past time story about the fan. I used to say "hello down there"...wierd. Our windows were high and having the AC window units in was hard to look out the windows, so I always had to use a chair to climb up and look out. ;-D
The colors you've chosen along with the layout of the "fan mail" card is beautiful.

TOOOO many times I remember getting in the fan and talking in them. Sounds like my childhood too! Of course my parents put in AC and cable TV AFTER I got married. My luck. Thanks for blogging, it is one of my everyday's.

Once again, you've come to my rescue (you enabler, you! LOL). I really liked this stamp, for all the nostalgic reasons you mentioned, but wasn't sure how versatile it would be. But your "fan mail" opened my eyes to possibilities! Many thanks Mish. Sending you hugs and cool breezes!

Hey Mish, have a recipe for you for homemade popsicles. You mentioned "slush", though, and this isn't that, but it still might be what you're looking for. BTW, my mom made them for me and my sisters when we were little and I now make them for my kids. They're a hit! Ok, recipe...

1 pkg. unsweetened kool-aid (the kind you have to add sugar to.

I don't use the ones included with the molds; I use craft sticks that you can get at Michael's or WM for $2.99 for 1,000 - lasts me awhile! lol

Enjoy! I hope this is what you're looking for.

Talk about memories! First let me say your card is wonderful, I love the effect of the glossy accents on the fan blades...brilliant!

I so remember the box fans in our bedrooms and we would sing and yell and say the vowels into it, until we were shushed by our parents. Here's something funny...we have standing fans now and guess what? Yep. I'm still singing, yelling and saying the vowels into it and I am 40 something years of age. It's so much fun...esp. with my daughters who are 17 and 12. Fun! Fun! Fun!

Stay cool...oh! and I remember that Tupperware mold, too, as my mom was a Tupperware Lady! I hope you find the recipe and then make a really cute recipe card for it and post it on your blog...I love your work, it's what I would make if I was half as creative as you! ;D ~ Thanks for the memories.

Love your card! Loved your fan story it reminded me of my childhood! We did the same thing! We had a big box fan in one room that would draw the nice warm air through all the open windows at night. During the day we just did without. So happy as an adult to have central air, cause the North Carolina heat is hot!! Have a great weekend! Jessie

I guess the speaking into the fan thing is universal...we used to do it here in Australia as well! My cousin Matt did stick his finger into the fan one summer and we had a mad rush to the emergency room for him to get 3 stitches....there was blood EVERYWHERE! Ah...the memories you brought back with that story. Hope you're all staying cool over there...here we have no option, it's FREEZING and I'm sitting in front of the heater!!
Thanks for sharing your cards and projects with us...you are a daily source of inspiration for me :)

Oh I just love this card! I enjoyed your trip down memory lane, and reading all the comments so far was great too. They sell those popsicle molds everywhere now. I got my set in the Target dollar spot awhile ago. :)
(thanks Judy for posting the recipe)

You are to funny! We always had a great time talking into the fan too, and making the popsicles in the tupperware mold! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

What a great card and you made me think about when I was a kid! I used to do the same thing in front of the fan. I had not thought about that in a very long time. Thanks for the story to jog my memory. We had and aqua fan too, but it was just a box fan. Oh for the good ole days!!

Hey Mish...are you sure you didn't live in Texas right down the street from ME?? LOL!!! I swear most of your "memories" sound like mine....we didn't have A/C either and used lots of fans too...we didn't know any different so I guess it was okay. We also had those Tupperware molds and used them bunches in the summer time...and made the sounds in front of the fans...just goofy kids entertaining themselves!! Your card is just adorable....I just love all the colors you used and I think I "need" that stamp now!! TFS your memories...HUGS!!!!

I thought I share another version. I had my Mom dig up her recipe. One, because I want some and because I don't remember her using koolaid. Here's her decades old version if you're interested.
3oz box jello (peach was my fav)
1 cup boiling water
1 cup cold water
1 Tbsp sugar

Boil 1 cup water, add jello and sugar until dissolved. Stir in cold water. Pour into paper cup and place in freezer. When it starts to set up place popsicles sticks. Enjoy.
She usaully doubled the recipe.
I'm headed to the store for jello and paper cups now! :)

Well, I deleted my blog, but I am still around. Still coming to yours for inspiration [daily]! :] The whole blog thing was too much pressure for me, but that's just the way I am! Love the card! And you always have such fun stories to tell!!

My kids are always talking into the fan to listen to the crazy way it changes the sounds. That is when they are not sticking things into it. I will have to try those popsicles-they love those almost as much as playing in the fan.

Love, love this! It's fun AND cute! And my parents had a fan that became mine when I moved into my first appartement that happened to be white and blue-green and look an awful lot like that!
