Blueberry Shoe Pie!

This card was inspired by a day of baking that my mom and I did. I'll tell you more about our pie in little bit. For this card I used Karen Lockhart's blueberry shoe pie stamp. Karen has several versions of shoe pies and I think they are SO clever! I colored this shoe with what other Copic color than BV04 Blue Berry, E31 and B96. I was able to get the variation of shades by simply layering on the same color of blue for the blueberries and the beige for the pie crust color. To add some sparkle, I used a clear Copic Spica glitter pen when I was all done coloring. The image was cut and embossed with a Spellbinder's Oval Die Template and then matted on a SB's scallop cut oval. For the ribbon and envelope I stamped Karen Lockhart's new Vine Millinery stamp in blue ink. You can check out all of Karen's new Millinery stamps at Ellen's website. Here's a close up of the Copic Spica glitter pens. Shimmery and sparkly!
And here's that pie I was talking about. Some time ago, I experimented with freezing prepared pie filling ingredients. I had a bunch of peaches and so I mixed up my pie filling and froze it in pie plates. I needed to see if it baked up okay as a pie, so I had my mom make her delicious, flaky pie crust and we tested out the pie filling. It was delicious and tasted *oh so fresh*!!
Have you ever had one of these? I don't know what you call 'em but my mom always made thise little pie crust things when she baked a pie. She took the left over pie crust, rolled it out and sprinkled on cinnamon and sugar and dotted it with butter. Rolled it up, shaped it into a crescent and baked it along with the pie. I think I loved these more than the actual pie. So when she started making one the other day, I was immediately taken back to my childhood...such a good memory. I also remember the day that the elderly Mrs. O'Neil came for her perm. My mom had baked a pie and one of these yummy crescent crusts.....Mrs. O'Neil ate the entire thing..didn't save me a morsel!! Little did she know that those tasty treats were for ME!! I had to watch Mrs. O'Neil verrrrry closely after that when she came for her perms. Pie crust stealer!!!! LOL! On a side note, check out my pot holders....Jordan made the little one from some scraps, my mom made the jean pocket ones and those old terry cloth ones are my favorites from my grandma. I keep on washin' em and they still keep on doing the job!!
Tip of the day: Use the Lockhart Millinery stamps to embellish your envelopes. They are the perfect length for a regular A2 size envy.

My Mom alwys did the same thing with the left over crust except she cut them like a cinnamon roll. Thanks for the reminding me of this great memory of my Mom. She has been gone 7 years now, and I haven't had those in sooooooo long!

Wow! Love the pretty card. I love that paper - bought several sheets of it - perfect for fall. Mmmmm your pie is making my mouth water. It looks so yummy. Will have to remember to try the little treats - sounds so yummy. You should make a scrapbook of all your baking/cooking experiences and give it to you mom. That would be a treasure to have. Have a great day. :)

I grew up with my mom making the same type thing, only instead of leaving it in a crescent, we slice ours into tiny little spirals ... bite size slices of YUMMM! My favorite part of the fall baking season.

Love your card, and the pie looks delicious too!. My mom does the same with the left over pie crust, except we would put strawberry jam instead of brown sugar and cinnamon. Wow that brings back memories! TFS

Wow - I thought that my mom invented that taste delight! (or at least grandma!) Only it wasn't mom that made it - it was always US. We learned how to roll out crust by ourselves with the rolling pin and put it in the oven ourselves too! Wonderful memory. Only now I'm panicing... did I ever show my son how to do this? Has mom? He's only 20 - is it too late?! This Thanksgiving it's on the list!

We would just roll out the leftovers flat and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Your post makes me want to bake a pie and try it rolled up like you do!

your cards are awesome. My Aunt used to do the same thing with left over pie crust. I always called them pie cinnamon rolls. I am not sure what they are called but they sure are good. Your pie looks so yummy and your card is beautiful.

I love making my pies from scratch...I learned from the master...my mom! I can't even eat a store-bought pie because the crust just isn't flakey! My mom rolls out the leftover dough and cut it into strips, then sprinkles the sugar and cinnamon over top and I do it, too. Next time I'll have to try your crescent! Yummy!

Michelle,

My mom and now my oldest son (who she taught to bake)both make these from leftover crust. I remember as a child fighting over them w/ my brother. My son figured that since my mom always bakes, the talent must have skipped me( shhh don't tell) so he learned to bake. Lucky for everyone he knows and his wife!
