Project Life Birthday Blog Hop

Please note:  I have TWO blog posts up today...this one and one for October Afternoon.  Be sure to scroll down to see my second post.  :)

The birthday celebration continues as Project Life turns 3!  The Project Life Creative Team is having a blog hop where you read about how Project Life has inspired us all AND you'll get the chance to enter for some fabulous Project Life products.  See the Creative Team links at the bottom of this post.
So why do I do Project Life?

For me, I want to create albums full of memories that my family will treasure for many years to come.  The big events like birthdays and the holidays are special but it's the everyday stuff that I think is so intriguing about Project Life.  I think about the things I would love to see in photos along with a short story.....like what my room looked like as a teenager, more photos of my siblings (especially my brother that died as a teenager), meals at our old dining room table, funny things we did, the toys we played with, etc.  Project Life allows me to capture all those memories of my family and more.  That's why I do it.

What's inspiring me right now about Project Life?

As we move into October, my mind starts to think about the holidays and baking and crafts.  One of my favorite things to look forward to is Ali Edwards' Daily December album.  This year she is going to be working with a 4 x6 album format.  You can read about her upcoming Daily December album for 2012  here.

I love the idea of working with the simple, smaller format but to twist things up a bit I've come up with a plan that will suit my needs.  I really want to be able to integrate my Project Life album and a Daily December album into one album.  So I'm going to use the 5 x 7 Horizontal Page Protectors that are just a size up from the 4 x 6 pages that Ali will be using.  This way I can fit a little more on my pages and nestle the pages right into my Project Album since those size pages for sure fit into my PL album.  I can still follow Ali's format for her album but just tweek the designs to suit my fancy.
You can get an idea of what this will look like from the photos below.  These are the vertical 5 x7 page protectors that I used to create a 2 page mini album of sorts for a night at the county fair.  The pages were just tucked right into my Project Life album.
My idea for my Daily December 2012 is to just insert the 5 x 7 horizontal pages into the weeks where they seem to fit the best.  And the great thing is that if my pages get too bulky or I decide I want to create a separate album, I can just take out all the 5 x 7 Daily December pages and create an entire separate album.

I'll have more about my Daily December process on my blog starting late October or early November.  Until then I just wanted to share my ideas and perhaps spark an idea for you.  I'll be using the October Afternoon Make it Merry collection + some of my own stash items for my DD.  And good for you, I'll be giving away a pack of the horizontal 5 x 7 page protectors!!
Keeping it organized:

To keep up with Project Life, we need to keep organized right? The Big Envelope Pages are perfect for storing all those bits and pieces of life that we collect.  You can use them for school papers, newspaper articles, photos, receipts, packaging....anything that you need to keep safe and organized until it makes it into your Project Life pages.
I've been using some of the Big Envelopes to store my October Afternoon collections.  I tuck all the small items like the tidbit packages, buttons, brads and stickers in the large pocket.  Then the 12 x 12 papers are filed behind the Big Envelope pocket.  I use one Big Envelope for each collection.  I love that!!

For my Daily December I am planning on keeping one Big Envelope pocket inside my Project Life album.  Here I will store photos, journaling notes and anything holiday related that I want to use.  No more having stuff scattered all over for the entire month of December.  I'll also be using a Big Envelope pocket to hold some of my smaller Daily December embellishments.  I WILL be organized this holiday season!!  And lucky for you I'm also giving away a package of the Big Envelopes!
Okay, I hope I've inspired you to geared up for the holidays. I'm getting very excited...to the point of where I want to play holiday music and set up the tree.  Uh just kidding, who does that in October right?  Thanks for stopping by and Happy Birthday to Project Life!

To enter for my drawing of the 5 x7 page protectors and the Big Envelope pockets:

Leave a comment on this post before Sunday, October 7th...10pm Central Time....telling me something unique you've done/could do with your Project Life.  Have you added lots of inserts?  Do you use it for a baby album?  Do you use special accents?  Do you keep it very simple?  I'd love to know! And sorry, but the contest is open to commenters with US addresses only.

I am using the Project Life system to get all of my scrapbooking caught up from my daughters life. She is now 10 years old. I am starting with putting all of the pages I have done in traditional scrapbooking style and will fill the voids with the Project Life style of scrapbooking.

I've done a mixture of digital and paper scrapbooking - that's my unique take on Project Life. I took a couple of years off from scrapbooking, so it's nice to have this creative outlet again.

I will just be starting PL in 2013 but plan to do 1 page per week with smaller add in page protectors for special occasions. Your giveaway should come in handy. Thanks for a chance to win.

I started doing Project Life in 2010. I have never made weekly layouts. Instead I just place the photos as I take them with the story beside them. If I want to (and have the time) I include traditional layouts (of different sizes) between the pocket pages in the album. Thanks for the giveaway!

Xin said...

I don't really do anything unique with my PL. Just keeping it simple. College + part-time work doesn't leave me much time to do scrapbooking!

Thanks for the chance of giving away these pockets and envelopes. Hmm. I love adding these small pockets makes your pages more fun!

Hi Mish! I actually use my PL in a different way than how it's intended. My hubby and I moved to Colorado Springs 5 years ago, and I'm using PL as a scrapbook, starting when we moved here. We LOVE it out here, and I wanted a simple way to keep the photos of all our CO adventures together. PL to the rescue! Thanks for the chance to win!

Amy Papale said...

I love your idea about using the large inserts to store your supplies. Very clever and a great use of the inserts. I am very new to PL and think I will start with one large album to document my daughter's life to this point (6 years worth) and then start fresh for 2013. I will keep it very basic, few embellishments just to get caught up and free myself of the "mom guilt" This way my pictures are in a book rather than in boxes. I know that is not how PL was intended, but it is the quickest way for me to catch up, it's a start.

Unknown said...

You are always inspiring! Love your posts and your Project Life creativity is amazing!!

Sharla said...

I have really enjoyed your blog over the past couple years and love your PL pages. I use my PL as a normal album, I don't do the Picture a Day, I just like the fact that I don't have to do a bunch of traditional layouts with all my pictures, if I want a special layout for my first page that's great, then just slip in the rest of the pics into the 4x6 pages! I do want to pick up some 5x7 pages though..that would add some fun!

Mendi M said...

Something unique? How about actually keeping up with it? That's unique for me! Thanks for the chance.

Seester2T said...

I do mine more as a year in review. I don't have kids so it's more about my husband, me and our dogs. I still keep it in order of months but I don't use the dividers just monthly cards to separate them and whatever I have for a month is what I have. Nice and simple. Some months are packed, some months may only have two pictures but that's okay. I do love all the new products that Becky has come out with though to jazz everything up but still keep it simple. I love that I can do this along with my traditional layouts and not feel overwhelmed. Thanks for the giveaway!

I was way behind with pictures from at least 10 years ago. I took the PL approach and put those pictures in the page protectors along with what journaling i could remember (see why you should at least write things down?) So still plugging away. Thanks!

I have used a couple of inserts for my PL album. I llike to use them for invitations, programs, enlargement photos, and artwork from my kids. Also used a 6x12 insert for my day in the life project.
I do a mix of simple and played up. I have a bit of trouble just sliding in a journaling card or photo without doing something to it (stamping, punches, washi, etc.) but I tend to stick with 4x6 photos and the 2x3 journaling cards.
Thanks for the chance to win!

I'm an event scrapbooker, so in PL I do a 2-page layout for each occasion (that has enough pics). Then, for the 'other stuff of life' in between, I have hodgepodge layouts. Everything's in general chronologic order (not specifically a week-by-week summary like many other PLs are doing).

Ah-ha No 1: LOVE your idea of using the 5x7 inserts (& yes I agree 5x7 will give me more room to play with, might even use some of the other sizes to change it up a bit throughout the month). Ah-ha No 2: LOVE your idea of using the 12x12 Pocket Pages to house your October Afternoon collection - I can really see that this would work for me too. I got so excited about your post that I shared with our Facebook Project Life Australia group - afterall good ideas have to be share. Thanks so much

My kids are all grown up, so I document the grandkid's doings... Plus, I want my kids to get to know me better, and PL is a good way of doing that. And it's so much fun!

something unique-I added the packaging from my Christmas presents last year so that I could see what I was "in to" that year. :) thanks for the chance to win!

I'm simple. Just trying to get the hang of it and get into a rhythm. I just started a little over a month ago and love it!

Debbie said...

I am just now taking the Project Life class and beginning my long journey of getting all the photos that are in bags, boxes and enveloped into Project Life Albums. I have many different sized photos, so the 5x7 inserts will be perfect for inserting the kids class photos. I am so excited to get started.

Love the idea of using the same designs/cards/ideas for a family history album. Makes it all seem much more doable!

I LOVE PL, mine has been mostly simple. But every so often I fancy it up a bit. Life is busy and I haven`t had time to get too creative unfortunately.

Thanks so much for the chance to win!

Thank you for this giveaway! I've been a scrapbooker for over 10 years and now only use project life for all my albums: the everyday albums and even my baby albums! Thank you for the chance to win!

well, i've given this project as a gift to two different brides to keep track of their first year of marriage. they loved it.
thanks for this opportunity!

I have just started PL and I decided as my first project to do my personal history in one album. My mom saved a lot of my stuff from baby through childhood- so I am incorporating as much of the memorabilia with the pictures as I can, to tell my life story. I love the pockets to put items in such as my girl scout sash and even a t-shirt from the first concert I went to. I am having a blast!

I am new to PL and at this point I am keeping it simple until I get in the groove. I consider myself a creative person but that is what as slowed me down in traditional scrapbooking. I have really gotten into simple embellishments and find that works good with the journal cards..so maybe its a happy medium to getting things done!

I keep my PL pretty simple, but love to add the occasional BIG picture for impact!

Shark said...

I'm using PL for our chronological documentation (vacations, holidays, birthdays etc. stay in the main album). But I'm planning to create a separate album once the Baby edition becomes available.
Thank you for the giveaway!

I scan all my kids artwork and print them in 3x4's to add to my PL albums... I don't want to forget anything!!

Jen said...

Cool idea! I love that I can include my kids' artwork and little scraps of notes and drawings that they leave here and there. Thanks for the chance to win!

Just to add-- I am one of those people who put a tree up in October lol but only one time and there were circumstances associated with that story, although my hubby won't let me forget it.

And speaking of PL, this story is one of those I will be adding to my 2000-2008 PL album(s) when I get everything ready to put it together. I am going back and getting those early years of our marriage consolidated into one or more albums and PL is helping me make that happen.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I tend to keep my PL very simple, a month at a time. I would love to try some new twists and the 5x7 would add some variety. Thanks for the giveaway.

I have been doing Project Life since 2010 now and one of my favorite tricks when I have lots of pictures is cutting a 4x6 photo in half and putting it in the journal spots. Unique, No. Easy, YES! That is the best part about this project, lots of memories, lots of stories, easy execution.

Felicia J said...

I have been doing project life for 3 years as well! Thanks for the chance!

I don't feel very creative. That's why I kept the album that I completed simple. I love that it still looks clean and fresh and fun due to the design elements!

Hi Mish!
Thanx for the opportunity :) I started PL in Feb for my own personal scrapbook. It has helped me rethink my picture taking and documentation of life. Really like how you use the 5x7 as a mini album within your album.

I'm new to PL so don't have anythign to say about anything unique that I have done with it, but I am dying to get caught up with my 12 year old son's photos. I also plan to get all the photos from my mom from my childhood years and use PL to get them into a book. I'm already addicted!

PattiM said...

I love that pl is so easy to use. I've never used the envelopes and would love to use it for extra photos..

The first year I kept it pretty simple. This year I decorate the 4x 6 dated journal card. I usually decorate it with something that happened during that week. I keep that theme up for the journal cards that week. So each week looks a bit different but summarizes the week
